In accordance with the regulations of the Commissioner of Education of the State of New York, all school districts are required to provide scoliosis screening for children in grades 5-9 at least once each school year. This routine scoliosis
screening, as part of the School Health Service, is done by the School Nurse.
Scoliosis is the medical term for lateral or 'side-to-side curvature of the spine. Normally, the spine curves slightly from front to back, but has no sideways curvatures and appears perfectly straight when viewed from the back. In a person with scoliosis, the spine curves slightly from side to side.
Scoliosis screening will begin in January during gym class. Each child will be individually screened, in private. In order to adequately view the shoulders, back, and lower spine the child's shirt must be removed. Girls should wear a bathing suit or body suit under their gym suit or other appropriate under garment. If your child requires further examination by a physician you will be notified by the school nurse. If you have any questions concerning the scoliosis screening please feel free to contact Mrs. Tollin, the school nurse at 804-1246.
