What's Happening the Week of December 4, 2023:
Please check your child's Take Home Folder daily for mail; homework should be put into this folder.
Daily homework assignments will be written under the morning news in the GREEN NOTEBOOK. Spelling homework is always written in the GREEN NOTEBOOK; do not use looseleaf.
Students may use the IXL website for enrichment; it can be accessed from my link box below. Use your child's school Google account to sign in.

Religion
The students will be preparing for their Advent and Carols Concert on December 6th. Please refer to the letter that was sent home outlining proper attire for the concert.
The students will begin their Advent journey, and they will be working on their Advent Good Deed Calendars at home. Each student wrote about some Advent deeds they plan on performing to get their hearts ready for Jesus at Christmas. Our class will also be watching Brother Francis' daily Advent videos which will guide the children through this month.
We will celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. The students will attend the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Friday.
Math
We will practicing the subtraction of two-digit numbers; there will be a quiz on Tuesday.
The students will be working on a Christmas tree craft which reviews the addition of two-digit numbers so they keep their computation skills sharp.
Please utilize the video in the link box if your child is having difficulty.
You may access both the math and reading resources using your child's card that was already sent home.
Reading
This week we will continue reading expository text. We will use the story, "Baby Bears", in the Literature Anthology to answer the Essential Question, "How are offspring like their parents?"
There is a reading test this week on Thursday.
Phonics
Refer to the parent letter introducing Unit 6. This unit introduces the students to the vowel-consonent "e" syllable type. This type of syllable is formed when a word has one long vowel and is followed by a consonant and the silent letter "e" at the end of a word.
This week's focus is using the "v-e" syllable type in multisyllabic words along with other syllable types. Examples are found in words like: cavemen, athlete, and umpire.

There are resources and videos in the link box below to practice at home. There is a cumulative list of unit videos for review.
There is a quiz on Friday.
Grammar
This week we continue working on proper nouns and common nouns.
Writing
The students will create a gingerbread person craft and complete a writing activity to describe it.
Our class will also work on a job application to be one of Santa's elves!
Spelling
There are no spelling words or test this week.
Science
The Mouse House Habitat Project is due on December 5th. The students will begin presenting their projects to the class. The second graders will also invite the kindergarten and first grade to take a "Mouse House" tour.
The students have completed taking notes on some of the various land and water habitats found on earth. The study guide for the habitat test will go home on Monday. Please use the notes from the blue science notebook to prepare for the test on Tuesday, December 12th.
Computer Lab/iReady Pathways
The children will be using their chromebooks to continue learning how to log into their school accounts and work on their iReady pathways in reading and math.
